Waste Environmental Management System

Waste Environmental Management System

Environmental Permits require you to have an up to date written management system in place before you start operations.

Key Points

A written management system must be in place before starting any site operations.

You will be in breach of your permit if you start operating and have not implemented a written management system.

The risks of your activities will determine how complex the management system will need to be.

What is an Environmental Management System?

An Environmental Management System (EMS) in a written system of procedures which explain how operators will manage their site activities whilst minimising the risk to the Environment.

Management Systems should be kept up to date and should accurately describe site activities and procedures.

The risk and complexities of site activities and permit will determine how detailed the EMS should be.

You can produce an EMS yourself or inline with industry standards such as ISO.

Who needs an EMS?

All permitted waste sites are required to have a written management system in place before operations start.

New Bespoke Environmental Permit Applicants will also need to submit an EMS Summary with their application.

If your waste permit was granted before 06.04.2008 and it does not include the requirement for a working plan / management system - you are still required to manage and operate your waste activities inline with a written management system.

Summary : Every waste site needs an EMS!

Key takeaways

It is important for staff to have access to and understand the management system.
