Case Study : Inert Waste Transfer Station Granted Permit

Hart's Waste Consultancy

CASE STUDY
SR2008 No11 : 75kte inert and excavation waste transfer station with treatment - PERMIT GRANTED FOR GRAB HIRE COMPANY!

Client :
Family run Grab Hire Company
Location : Nottinghamshire
Requirement : Prepare and submit Environmental Permit Application and ongoing WAMITAB Cover and Compliance Support.

Where it started :

Our client operated a family run Grab Hire and Muck Away business for numerous years in Nottinghamshire. After several increases in waste disposal costs , they quickly realised that becoming self sufficient and managing their own waste was critical.

How we helped:

1. We had a chat with the business owner to find out what the wanted to do , where they planned to do it and whether they understood what operating a waste site involves. A follow up site visit was made so we could understand the layout and location of the site.

2. The correct type of permit was chosen for our clients activities.

Activities include the importation of inert waste and production of aggregate products.

The Standard Rules permit type was agreed with our client.

3. The site was screened to ensure it met Standard Rules Criteria. This was conducted by us as a desktop background check. The site passed all required criteria.

4. After our client gave us the go ahead , we set about preparing all necessary documents for the Environmental Permit Application. These documents include application forms , site plans , competence proof , management systems and emission plans. A final check through was made with the client to ensure they were happy with how the overall management of the site would be carried out.

5. Environmental Permit application submitted by us and fees for the permit application paid for by our client.

The application process was overseen by us the whole way through with minimal disruption to our client.

6. Environmental Permit Granted!

What happened after...

Our client was provided with a full management system and supporting documents , we ensures they were fully compliant before starting to accept waste at their newly permitted site.

WAMITAB Cover was provided to ensure ongoing compliance with the Environmental Permit but more importantly , to ensure our client had on hand advice and guidance.

If you currently hold a T9 Waste Exemption for the Recovery of Scrap Metal , you will be aware that this is to be removed in 2025. Waste exemptions are changing , and one of the big changes set to come into force is the revocation of the the T9 Recovery of Scrap Metal Exemption. The changes are due to come into place in 2025 , however this is dependent on various political factors , so as yet no specific deadline has been set. To remedy the removal of the T 9 Waste Exemption , a new Standard Rules Permit has been put into place. The new permit is a SR2012 No11 : Small Metal Recycling Facility (less than 5000 tonnes per year). If you choose to carry on this waste activity after the exemption has been removed , you will be doing this illegally. Therefore , it is important that you put plans in place now to prevent your business being affected. We can help with the application and ongoing compliance of this new permit , so give us a call to see if we can advise before the changes come into force.
